Sport and Exercise Science
Objectives
The Department of Sport and Exercise Science (SES) offers a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management, a Bachelor of Arts in Athletic Training, and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Movement Science.
Students in the Sport Management major select one of two concentrations within the curriculum: Sport Administration and Leadership or Fitness Administration and Leadership. The Sport Management curriculum includes core courses required of all majors. Upon selecting a concentration, students will be required to take specific courses that support their choice of concentration. In addition, students will select electives within their area of study to complete their major coursework.
The Sport Management curriculum is designed to prepare students for employment in any of the following settings: corporate fitness programs, fitness clubs, facility/event management, private sport clubs, athletics, sports business, sport governing bodies, YMCA/YWCA, and professional sport franchises. The capstone course of the Sport Management major is SPEX 48000 Sport Management Internship. There is an application procedure for this course which includes the Sport Management Program Director’s consent, a 2.50 cumulative GPA in seven prerequisite internship courses, and the successful completion of SPEX 47100 Pre-Internship Seminar. The Athletic Training Education Program is accredited by CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education). It is designed to prepare students for the following types of employment settings: outpatient rehabilitation centers, educational environments, professional sport franchises, and medical offices. Successful completion of this program allows students to sit for the certifying exam conducted by the Board of Certification. Transfer students need 6 semesters and 1 summer session, or 7 semesters to complete necessary coursework. Lewis University is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), 6850 Austin Center Blvd., Suite 100, Austin, TX 78731-3101. Effective February 19, 2016, CAATE has placed the Athletic Training program on Probation. We remain an accredited program. Probation is the result of first-time pass rates on the Board of Certification exam in 2013-14.The University has taken several corrective measures and anticipates being removed from probation in 2017.
Students pursuing the Athletic Training major MUST apply and BE ACCEPTED into the program. Students may apply to the program if they have a 2.50 cumulative GPA, meet technical standards, and have successfully completed the following courses: SPEX 17100 First Aid and Adult CPR, SPEX 25000 Introduction to Athletic Training, SPEX 25100 Athletic Taping Lab, BIOL 10100/BIOL 10200 Anatomy and Physiology 1 and Lab, and BIOL 10300/BIOL 10400 Anatomy and Physiology 2 and Lab. The application and academic requirements of the program can be found in the Athletic Training Education Program Manual, which is available from the Program Director or the Lewis University website.
The Department of Sport and Exercise Science also offers a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Movement Science that prepares students for a career within movement-based fields. The program features elements of exercise science, sport science, sport leadership and innovation, coaching, fitness, health, nutrition, biomechanics, and motor behavior. This program will prepare students for a wide-variety of specializations within sport and fitness coaching and training, entrepreneurship and innovation in sport and exercise science, cardiovascular fitness and health, biomechanics, motion analysis, sport and exercise nutrition, sport engineering, and sport philanthropy. The Exercise and Movement Science program focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship, globalization, engineering, and technology as it relates to the field.
