Objectives
Physics is concerned with the laws that govern the material universe at its most fundamental level. These laws are expressed through mathematics and uncovered through study, experiment and contemplation. They apply at every scale of the physical universe - from ultramicroscopic to cosmic. Concentrating in physics at Lewis University will not only teach you about the structure of these laws but will help you to sharpen your mathematical skills and cultivate powerful, broadly applicable problem-solving abilities. Career opportunities are available to physics graduates in a variety of fields, including industry, academia, consulting, medicine, law, teaching, biotechnology, engineering and business. In view of the diversity of goals that students bring to the study of physics, the Lewis University Physics Department has made a concerted effort to take this fact into consideration when selecting its core requirements. This allows faculty freedom to advise students in a selection of elective courses that would be most advantageous in advancing the students toward their individual goals.
The Physics Department offers a B.S., a B.A., a B.A. which prepares future teachers of high school Physics, a minor in Physics, transfer and pre-engineering programs, and a program in conjunction with Illinois Institute of Technology awarding a major in Physics from Lewis (B.S.) and another major in Aerospace Engineering from IIT (B.S.).
All Physics majors must earn a grade of “C” or better in a prerequisite Physics course in order to advance to the next course in a sequence. In addition, they must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, both within the major and overall in order to complete the degree.
