Secondary Certification in Mathematics

In conjunction with the College of Education, the offers a fully approved teacher education program which prepares candidates to teach mathematics in grades 6-12 in public and private schools in the State of Illinois. The program is approved by the State Teacher Certification Board in conjunction with the Illinois State Board of Education and is based on the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics. Candidates seeking teacher certification in Mathematics must complete Special Methods: Teaching Mathematics in Grades 6-12 (53-317). Students must also complete the following specific requirements as part of their course work in the major: Probability and Statistics (13-315), Topics in Geometry (13-320) and History of Mathematics (13-330). Teacher education candidates major in both Mathematics and Secondary Education and should consult with advisors in both the Mathematics Department and the College of Education. Candidates can have a maximum of two “C’s” in their content area classes.
